ON-ARRIVAL TRAINING // ŠKOLENIE PO PRÍCHODE NA PROJEKT EDS

After just two weeks of our first encounter with little and lovely Banská Bystrica, Miriam and I had the chance to go on our On-arrival training. Even if before getting to this meeting, set in the hotel Villa Siesta in the Vysoké Tatry, we had heard a lot about on-arrival trainings, we didn’t had the slightest idea of how we will feel afterwards.

To be absolutely fair, after half and hour of running our hearts out under the rain (keeping the Spanish tradition of being always late), a three hours journey on a bus and a ‘how in the name of god should I know which one is my bus stop’ experience, we didn’t feel like going to anywhere anymore. Fortunately, after checking out a table full of tea, coffee and snacks in the seminar room, we started feeling a bit more receptive.

Our first evening consisted of a few first impressions, a filling dinner and a bit of Tatransky čaj, which is definitely not a čaj (tea) and which I strongly recommend only in small amounts (I’m talking from my experience).

In the second day, we could get on with the activities the trainers had prepared for us. In relation to this, I should point out that anything that happened in the On-arrival training wasn’t too formal nor strict: we could propose changes, decide for ourselves which schedule we preferred and even create our own activities. This, in my opinion, helped to develop our cooperation, as well as the confidence we felt towards the other EVS participants and our trainers (as we were kind of the same level).

During the whole training, we could participate in several tasks, games or energizers that were set in between the sessions about the EVS in general and our projects in particular. These activities, even if at first felt created only for our entertainment and not very related to something we could learn of, turned out to be the most profitable ones for us. Maybe because a simple game, rather than a speech about it, is the best one of making you aware that you are not alone in this activity, that your little contribution is as helpful as the aid you get from others and that a group of small ideas and characters could make a big, useful task.

And after all these experiences, once in the train back home, you really realize what is behind the sentences you heard about on-arrival trainings, you completely understand the real meaning of ‘it’s gonna be great’. Because you On-arrival training is not only socializing, it’s not only intercultural learning. It’s about you, feeling more than ever, that this could be an important year of your life, that this could actually mean something and, especially, that all depends on you.

Irene.

To nám, podľa mňa, pomohlo nájsť k sebe cestu. Vďaka tomu sme začali spolupracovať a vybudovali si dôveru k školiteľom a ostatným účastníkom EDS (keďže sme boli približne na rovnakej úrovni).

Úplne pochopíte význam vety „Bude to paráda!“.

  1. Irene, thank you very much for your first post on the blog 🙂 I am happy to read that your On-arrival gave you really good energy to start with. And I believe you will be able to keep it alive, despite (EVS) life sometimes is a bit harder than training 🙂 Let this sometimes stay sometimes and let the rest shine through 🙂

  2. A beautifully written article! Even if no word could adequately depict what the on-arrival training is, one just has to live it! Thank you for all what you have shared with us and for having enriched the training by your smile and your ideas! I wish you the year of your life in Banská Bystrica!
